Xiaomi unveils the Mi Drone starting at $380

Xiaomi, popularly knows as the ‘Apple’ of china has been showcasing some really amazing products lately. The latest being a drone. Yes you read that write, a ‘DRONE’.

Xiaomi launched their first ever drone named ‘Mi Drone’. predictable name, right?

Xiaomi’s Mi Drone is basically a quadcopter with a three-axis gimbal, a remote control which uses your Mi smartphone as its viewfinder and a 4K camera. The camera uses a Sony 12.4-megapixel sensor that can capture video at up to 3,840 x 2,160 at 30 fps; and as you’d expect, it can take RAW photos

The main advantage that Xiaomi is touting with the Mi Drone is the modularity of it. The camera module in the drone is detachable just like the rotors. Mi Drone has a 5,100mAh battery which is replaceable and is claimed to get the unit 27 minutes of flight time on a single charge which is AMAZING.

Mi Drone has a visual positioning system on the bottom which allows it to remain stable while flying at low altitudes in some environments where it cannot get a satellite signal. To make things easier for beginners, the controller has a dedicated button for take off and landing — just do a short press and then a long press to do either. The controller also has a dial on the left for tilting the camera, and there’s a shutter button on the other side. At the bottom side, there’s a flap that hides a micro-USB port for recharging the controller.

Mi Drone comes in 2 variants, The 4K version which costs around $480 and the 1080p model which costs around $380.

Xiaomi notes that the 1080p Mi Drone will be crowdfunded on the Mi Home app starting 26th May 2016 while the 4K option will be available for testing via an open beta programme at the end of July.

With the launch if Mi Drone Xiaomi is all set to give a tough competition to the DJI’s Phantom series.
